Special Pop-up exhibition Tobias Keene exhibition
http://www.britweek.org/2010/LA_art.html
Rivera & Rivera Gallery Opening Night 7 – 10 pm
1100 South Hope Street, Los Angeles, CA 90015 (310) 713-1635 www.riveraandrivera.com
RIVERA & RIVERA, in conjunction with Brit Week Los Angeles, presents Tobias Keene: New Paintings, this Friday May 7th from
7-10PM. Complimentary drinks and appetizers. Food provided by Rivera restaurant – One of LA’s best restaurants.
Tobias Keene is a third generation British Artist who has lived in Los Angeles for the last twenty years. His artistic
influences are very British – Stubbs, Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud- though it’s his imagination and day-to-day US living
that creates his work. “My work is the subconscious portrayal of childhood memories that are running into an unknown
ambiguous future,” Keene has said.
Keene experiments with new compositions and subject matter in his recent paintings. By isolating images on canvas, he
creates moments of collective consciousness and cognitive visual explorations of the power and fragility of the human race.
He favors large format canvases with flat, bold color and expressive painterly technique. Although prominent British icons
are often featured in his work, the figures of playful children and animals enrich the sunny Angeleno spirit of this
exhibition.
Brit Week events around Los Angeles celebrate British connections to California. Please visit their website for a full
schedule of events and locations. http://britweek.org/2010/about.html
http://www.britweek.org/2010/LA_art.html
Current exhibition Dirk Hagner: The Hungry Eye, (Der Hunger Des Auges) marks a reflective moment in the long and inventive
career of a master printmaker. Carefully curated from a decade of creative work, this exhibition explores a vast range of
complex visual and intellectual ideas. The Hungry Eye takes the viewer on a journey through color, medium, texture, and
composition while simultaneously delving into philosophy, poetry, history, and science.

Special Cultural Evening and Diplomatic Reception at the Italian Cultural Institute
Friday, May 7
- The Majesty of Rome;
- The Glory of Florence; and especially
- The Beauty that is Venice
Tonight, you are invited to attend a very special evening as we step onto foreign soil and experience centuries worth of
Italian history and culture. Our hosts at the Consulate of Italy are assisting TTD’s Young Professional’s Cultural Society
with an evening catered to bringing two different countries together for an in-depth cultural exchange.
Featuring:
1) OPEN ITALIAN BAR AND ITALIAN WINE TASTING:
Sample a variety of Italian wines (and other drinks).
2) ITALIAN BUFFET:
Tonight, we will be preparing a light buffet, traditionally served in Italy and for the special VIP guests of the
Consulate.
Featuring:
Penne Arriabiata
Meat Lasagna
Cesar salad
Assorted Breads
3) LIVE ITALIAN OPERA PRESENTATION:
The first opera was performed in 1600 at the wedding of Maria de Medici and Henry IV of France at the Palazzo Pitti in
Florence. Since then, Italy has created much of the world’s greatest opera. From Monteverdi’s creations at the Teatro San
Cassiano, to Rossini’s comic operas such as The Barber of Seville, to the new and rising opera pieces of the 21st Century,
the standard for all opera originates in, and permeates, the Italian soul.
Tonight we present you with a unique sampling of timeless classics from the leading Opera houses of Italy. Two opera
singers will be on hand for a live exclusive performance (from the Baroque, through the romantic period and to today).
4) PREMIERE OF AN ITALIAN ART DISPLAY: Interior Costume by Enzo Cucchi
Inaugurated at the Capodimonte Museum in Naples in the summer of 2009 and later shown at MACRO in Rome, the exhibition
Interior Costume premieres in the States at the IIC of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Enzo Cucchi, one of the most original
and visionary members of the Transavanguardia movement, presents an installation in which he displays his symbolic vision
of the universe. Achille Bonito Oliva, curator of the exhibition and founder of the Transavanguarde movement states that
“when Enzo Cucchi’s work – painting, drawing, sculpture – becomes architecture, Interior Costume, an exhibition of floating
images on paper as anthropomorphic shapes, does indeed compete with the Tower of Babel.” The exhibition is accompanied by a
bilingual catalogue designed by the artist and published by Incontri Internazionali d’Arte directed by Graziella Lonardi
Buontempo. Preface by Nicola Spinosa, Supervisor of the Naples Museum Hub.
5) ITALIAN FILM:
Our hosts are putting together a special film to highlight the beauty and culture of Italy’s cities and countryside.
6) DIPLOMATIC GREETING:
Exchange political, cultural and social dialogue with several of Italy’s diplomats – invited to address and meet with Los
Angeles’young professional attendees. At present, we have invited and are hoping that the Consul General will make a
special greeting (further details on this will be updated).
Suggested Attire: Business/Casual (no jeans or tee shirts).
Directions: Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles
1023 Hilgard Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90024
Cost: $40.00

About ReForest California:
California state parks that were hard-hit by catastrophic wildfires need a helping hand. After an intense wildfire, it is
difficult or impossible for remaining trees to spread seeds widely enough to generate new forest. These decimated areas are
at risk for landslides, soil degradation and severe erosion.
By replanting trees soon after a fire, we can help to make regeneration possible before competing brush and plants take
over an area. Reforestation has the potential to transform thousands of acres by supporting wildlife, improving air quality
and stabilizing the soil. It also directly benefits state park visitors and residents in the vicinity.
Your donation to the Reforest California project will make a critical contribution to restoring natural balance in these
fragile areas.

Admit it: There’s cocktail attire hanging in your closet that you’re secretly bummed you don’t get to wear more often.
Sequins, glitter, sharp suits. Just slipping them on makes you feel like you’re strutting around in your own Vanity Fair
fragrance ad. Well TIPS is giving you an opportunity to strut your stuff in the off-season — during our first annual
Spring Charity Ball!
Doll yourself up and meet us at a sumptuous, luxury loft in downtown LA. There you’ll treat yourself to an exquisite,
catered dinner; premium open bar; and hopping music from a live DJ. Better yet, you can indulge guilt-free, knowing that
ALL event profits are going to a worthy cause: Kiva, the micro-lending organization that helps entrepreneurs in the
developing world pull themselves out of poverty — one loan at a time. (See below for more)
Our venue for the night is Evo, one of LA’s most architecturally-acclaimed new downtown developments. We’ll be champagning
the night away amidst Evo’s custom-built, designer-furnished space, taking in the breath-taking 360-degree panoramic views
of the downtown city skyline and LA Live. It’s truly a sensual feast: Marble, polished concrete, outdoor decks, soaring
ceilings, stunning views…. And it’s all ours for the night.
This is an event not to be missed! And please make sure to include your friends in the fun and pass this invitation along.
Not only will it be a lavish affair, but every ticket purchased will DIRECTLY help an entrepreneur in the developing world.
